This may not be the laugh-a-minute comedy that you expect from director Don Aykroyd and his fellow graduates from the 'National Lampoon' school of lunacy, Chevy Chase and John Candy. "An absolute failure as a comedy," thundered one British critic. But it's an oddly satisfying film if only because it lets loose a real sense of the bizarre. Aykroyd plays a 106-year-old judge who dispenses medieval justice in an oddball corner of rural America. It's the sort of place where speeders are fed into a fairground device called "Mr Bonestripper". Chase plays the innocent New Yorker who gets trapped in the hell of Valkenavia and Candy plays, among other parts, the judge's deaf-mute granddaughter... May become a cult movie in years to come.
