Karen Arthur, an award-winning director of concerned TV movies since 1975, gained further plaudits for this unflinching portrayal of racial prejudice which threatens to poison a small Canadian town. Described by one TV critic as 'a High Noon of morality', the story features an unusually thoughtful and forthright performance from Lindsay Wagner as a mother who realises, to her horror, that what her son is bringing home from school is dangerous anti-Jewish rant persuasively delivered by the boy's teacher. Her battle to expose this is complicated by the fact that the teacher is also the well-liked town mayor. In this role, Randy Quaid gives a calm but chilling performance far removed from his usual on-screen amiable oafs. Director Arthur hits all the right notes to bring her messages dramatically home. Screenwriter William Schmidt describes the story as 'a fictionalised drama suggested by real events'.
