This is the true story of post-war Sicilian bandit Salvatore Giuliano who was at odds with the police, the church and the Mafia (who by turns try to kill and recruit him). Sounds like exciting stuff, but it fails to catch fire, thanks largely to a bland central performance by Christopher Lambert and slow, drifting direction from Michael Cimino. On the plus side, it looks good - with great scenery and excellent photography. The international cast - which includes Terence Stamp, Richard Bauer, Barbara Sukowa and Joss Ackland - contributes an odd collection of accents. In fact, the acting high points are from Ackland who, complete with convincing Italian accent, plays the Mafia boss who doesn't quite know how to deal with Giuliano.
