This was former radio producer Arch Oboler's second good film thriller (following his debut with the eye-opening 'Bewitched') and it was a pity that he subsequently chose to dissipate his talent on movies that relied on gimmicks for their effect. Here, Oboler uses John Hodiak's smooth good looks to great effect, inducing the best performance of the star's career as the nightclub owner who revels in his own corruption - and in the hold he has over the (married) heroine, surprisingly well played by middle-range talent Frances Gifford. Gripping, glittery stuff.
