The knowledge that this period romp is based on a Barbara Cartland romance may put some people off, but if they switch over they'll miss an enjoyable and well-made swashbuckler. Hugh Grant is dashing as the hero, the Silver Blade, and Lysette Anthony makes a winsome heroine. There is strong support from a host of star names, including Michael York, Oliver Reed, Claire Bloom, Emma Samms, John Mills and Robert Morley. The film looks good and is directed with pace by John Hough. Lots of damsels in distress, sneering villains and flashing swordplay. Not much beneath the surface her, but good old-fashioned fun. Grant's legions of new fans will love it.
