One of Woody Allen's better movies, this blends his three themes - comedy, drama and personal angst - in an almost seamless a way. Judah (Martin Landau) is faced with a neurotic, quasi-blackmailing mistress (Anjelica Huston) and a gangster brother (Jerry Orbach) who offers him the devil's way out of the mess. Allen himself stars as a twitchy documentary filmmaker whose marriage is falling apart. He fears his love for TV girl Mia Farrow may not be reciprocated and is surrounded by people more successful than himself. Though a little top heavy with philosophical talk, the film and its doomy mood are lightened by some typical Woody one-liners.
