Matthew Modine is the energetic lead in this comic drama about a student's first year at medical school. He plays Joe Slovak, the son of a fisherman, who, once at school, seems content to coast along just getting by, much to the consternation of his tutors. Although there are solid performances from Modine, Christine Lahti, Todd Field and John Scott Clough, the script isn't terribly good and the characters all seem one-dimensional. To offset this, director Thom Eberhardt does pound it along with enough pace to hold the interest. Not bad, but a sharper script would have made it a whole lot better.
