One of those sudden love, will-he-won't-he hang on to her? romances at which Hollywood has been adept since the silent days. This one keeps you guessing right up to the last few seconds as to whether the central couple will end up together. Ringwald, once again the gal from the wrong side of the tracks, and McCarthy, once again the college boy with everything, may not be the very brightest of the old Brat Pack, but here prove charismatic and thoughtful enough to carry the old framework over for a touchdown, and raise a tear or two along the way. Additional complications to their contrasting lifestyles are raised by the facts that he has to jilt a fiancee and she has to ditch a feckless husband. The dialogue has the occasional hiccup - 'Listen to him - he's a fifth-year senior' - but is mostly sensible, even if it makes McCarthy's character the original Doubting Thomas. At the slightest hint of the scarlet in Ringwald's past he's ready to walk out: some great love. Under the circumstances, it's to the credit of the two leading players that you care to the end.
