It sounds unkind to say it in these harsh times, but the characters in Stanley & Iris are really too nice for words. Jane Fonda is a widow with a pregnant daughter, scraping up a living in a bakery. Robert De Niro is a cook with the same firm. He helps her when she gets mugged, but gets fired because he can't read or write. Yes, we know, you can tell us the rest (given that De Niro's an inventor, too), but it's pleasantly done, without too much incident or bite, but rarely boring to be with and leisurely rather than slow, as the two characters tentatively and uncertainly build their relationship.
