Jack Nicholson's reward for his Easy Rider Oscar nomination was to be thrown in as ballast as the good ship Barbra Streisand set sail on another epic musical. The melodies are lovely, but the leaky old plot, something about hypnotism and previous reincarnation, drifts on much too long even for the incurably romantic. Jack even sang in this one, perhaps too badly (or too well): at any rate his song had been tossed overboard when the film came out. 'They promised me I wouldn't be dubbed,' he said. 'At least they kept their word.'
