The fairies of FernGully are horrified to learn that humans are cutting down the forest. One of the humans, Zak, an Australian student (with an American accent) helping the tree-fellers, is accidentally instrumental in releasing Hexxus (voiced by Tim Curry), an evil spirit of the woods, from his tree prison.
Shrunk to fairy size by the precocious Krysta (who has much the same fascination for humans that got The Little Mermaid into so much trouble), Zak helps the fairies try to fight both Hexxus and the loggers.
Helping and hindering in the fight is Batty Koda (distinctively voiced by Robin Williams), a bat escaped from laboratory experiments (yes, all ecological protest is here).
Lively enough when Batty and Hexxus are around, the film also has a successful line in humour - a singing iguana is good fun - but could do with rather more of it.
The scenes between Zak and Krysta are typically drippy cartoon romance. Mostly excellent, though, for children of eight or less.
