This is the one about the unsuspecting hero/heroine who gets a psycho as servant/housekeeper/babysitter/flatmate. Perm heroine and flatmate from these possibilities and you have Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh as the protagonists in a tale of terror adapted from the novel Single White Female Seeks Same. The story's nicely set up, the last 15 minutes superbly edited and very exciting with a final duel to the death, predictably in the spooky underbelly of the apartment block we've been shown at the beginning. In between, though, it goes on a bit and gets tedious, moving in fits and starts when it should be tightening the tension. Tiny Jason Leigh is tough to take as a ferocious fiend but she really does give it her best shot, as does Fonda in one of the most effective roles of her career. Stephen Tobolowsky contributes yet another of his slimebags, but this is the girls' show and they make the most of it. DQ)
