In between episodes of the Look Who's Talking comedy saga, John Travolta ventured into Miami Vice territory - but the territory and change of pace don't suit him. Playing an idealistic social worker and ex-alcoholic, he becomes involved with a vicious Florida crack gang through his efforts to rescue a 13-year-old boy from a life of crime. The gang itself has a whole army of such boys, supplying crack to the nation. And the penalty for defection is, naturally, death. A slimline Travolta swears a lot, sweats a lot and goes without a shave, but can't convince us that all this is quite his cup of tea, especially the serial-like developments that leave him dangling over a pit of alligators. Although based on true events and people, which puts its heart firmly in the right place, the slack treatment the film gets makes it definitely a second-class citizen in the genre. STAR SPOT: Benjamin Bratt, currently romancing Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality, as Carlos - one of his earliest roles.
