Casino

Martin Scorsese hooks up with Goodfellas Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci in 1970s Las Vegas for another meaty slice of Mafia life. By turns glitzy, glamorous, seedy and brutal, it sees De Niro as a wiseguy who makes it big then throws it all away. Sharon Stone is a revelation as his unstable, unpredictable wife, while Pesci gives it his best psychotic sidekick shtick. Criminally good.

Joe Pesci broke a rib during the cornfield scene - the same one he broke in Raging Bull.

Director Martin Scorsese returns with actors Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci in tow to the gangster theme that served them so well in the critically acclaimed GoodFellas.

This time, De Niro is a smalltime Mafia hood and successful gambler who rises to the top in the world of Las Vegas casinos, but who is brought down by the actions of his drug-addicted wife (Sharon Stone) and psychotic best friend (who else but Pesci?). Casino

Epic in scale, Scorsese turns in a breathtaking tale of money, sex, greed, twisted loyalties and naked ambition. And it's ultra-violent.

But the high point of the film has to be the transformation of Sharon Stone from beautiful bimbo to award-winning actress of great, untapped talent. Her performance (which earned her the Best Actress Golden Globe Award) is nothing short of miraculous.

The camerawork is dazzling, the sets and costumes spot-on. Highly recommended, but not for the weak of constitution.

A 5-star, must own film. A friend scratched my DVD and parts of it wouldn't play... needless to say they left my company short term with a warm ear. Casino has everything you want and need in a mafia movie, sure it isn't as memorable as The Godfather and Goodfellas.... but it is up there.

This film is as controversial as it is brilliant. Each character brings you into the screen and shows you the not so glamorous side of their lives. A wake up call to anyone who dreams of being a mob boss or mafia man. Those who are easily disturbed by graphic violence should avoid the final scene with Joe Pesci in the cornfield as well as several other graphic displays of brutality. Hard to believe that this was based on true characters and disturbing to think that people could be so ruthless.

This is my all time favourite film. It's a definite must- see for any DeN iro or Pesci fans: more crime and violence than you can shake a stick at. Highlights? Pesci repeatedly plunging a pen into the neck of some "wrong time wrong place" guy in a bar. Also the near death beating and live burial he and his cousin receive in the desert. The soundtrack adds to the dramatic aura that this movie creates so well. Not forgetting Sharon Stone: who also pulls off a show-stopping performance.
