Johnson made his mark writing and directing Grumpy Old Men - before being thrust into the limelight as the man behind Daredevil.
He made his directorial debut in 1998 with Simon Birch, which he also scripted, based on the John Irving novel, A Prayer for Owen Meany.
As a screenwriter, Johnson is best known for his hit pictures Grumpy Old Men and the sequel, Grumpier Old Men, starring screen legends Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.
His other screenplays include Big Bully, starring Rick Moranis and Tom Arnold, and Jack Frost, starring Michael Keaton.
Daredevil, starring Ben Affleck and Colin Farrell, is the first blockbuster from the self-confessed Marvel Comics fan.
