Go-for-the-throat, full throttle weepie, about a handsome, youngish widower (Peter Gallagher) whose all-consuming grief over his wife Gillian (Michelle Pfeiffer in a cameo), who has died in a boating accident, leads him to neglect his sexy teenage daughter (Claire Danes). She responds by trying to seduce an older, family friend. Writer-producer David E Kelley, creator of TV's Ally McBeal and Chicago Hope, makes a polished job of this, even if the drama isn't always too exciting, there aren't many laughs, and some will find the grieving characters hard to sympathise with when they doand say such irritating things. But it's credible, warm and appealing in its very American emotional way, and by the end, you feel your heart is well and truly tugged. If you're wondering why Pfeiffer is in for a walk-on, she's Kelley's real-life wife. .
