If you've had an up day, this will bring you back down. Beneath the idyllic pasture of a 1000-acre farm lies a tarpit of misery. Daddy (Jason Robards) beat his daughters (Jessica Lange, Michelle Pfeiffer) then had sex with them as soon as they reached puberty. Lange's husband (Keith Carradine) covets the farm but not his wife. Pfeiffer's heavy-drinking spouse (Kevin Anderson) is repelled by her mastectomy. Both women in turn have affairs with rootless drifter Colin Firth. Daddy gifts them the farm but, after a row, sues to get it back. Are there any upbeat aspects to this? Well, actually, no. Despite towering performances by Lange and Pfeiffer, it all gets way too much long before the end.
