As well as being the star, Kirk Douglas made his debut as a director on this pirate yarn based on a story by Robert Louis Stevenson. Douglas' wife Anne was co-producer. Douglas became an enthusiastic balloonist - a balloon figures prominently in the action - when he filmed the story on locations along the coast of the former Yugoslavia. In the film, Douglas, like everyone else, strenuously over-plays, as a one-legged rogue called Peg, in a story whose strongest asset is Jack Cardiff's sunny Technicolor photography. Children will enjoy the simple blood-and-thunder Douglas provides. Adults may just stay awake long enough to spot Danny DeVito in one of his earliest roles.
