Disney rarely missed with its British films and this is another winner. Jodie Foster is the tough American 14-year-old whom a crooked detective plans to pass off as the heiress to an English fortune. Naturally, once in England, Jodie's cynical exterior soon breaks down to reveal a heart of pure Disney, especially when the marchioness (Helen Hayes) proves all but broke and the butler (David Niven) appears in a number of disguises to help keep up appearances. Things develop well from here, with some lovely photography of the English countryside not allowed to interfere with a good rattling pace. One is inclined to overlook holes in the plot, although we would have thought that, with the marchioness supposedly too skint to keep things going, her autographed copy of Gray's works might have fetched a bob or two.
