It must have been every actor's greatest dread in the 70s to be cast in a film with Jodie Foster, that precocious bundle of young talent. And imagine Jodie playing a girl with only a short time to live. Well, that's just what she does in this beautifully photographed weepie, in which she makes all her adult co-stars seem shallow by her mature understanding of the role and consequent understated performance - which goes a long way towards taking the stickiness out of the film's sentiment to ensure that you'll have tears in your eyes by the fade-out.
