This big-scale, two-fisted adventure story was released in Britain under the more poetic title East of the Rising Sun. Set during World War Two, the film's action comes in frequent bursts once Spencer Tracy and James Stewart (playing an ex-jailbird and a newspaperman respectively) are put ashore behind enemy Japanese lines. The entire cast, in fact, is quite breathtakingly formidable and, unsurprisingly, strike a good many sparks off one another. Down in the credits, you may spot one for `Music Conductor'. The name: Andre Previn, then only 21.
