Louis Calhern

A seasoned stage actor, Calhern played some leads in silent films of the 1920s including Lois Weber's The Blot, but by the 1930s was in demand as a character actor in Hollywood.
Calhern is well remembered today as conniving Ambassador Trentino in the 1933 Marx Brothers film Duck Soup, after which he appeared in The Count Of Monte Cristo.
He reached his peak in the 1950s playing a master criminal in The Asphalt Jungle, Oliver Wendell Holmes in The Magnificent Yankee, for which he was Oscar nominated.
He played the title role of Julius Caesar, and a cynical teacher in Blackboard Jungle.
Calhern died in Tokyo while filming The Teahouse of the August Moon.
