Set against a backdrop of the Spanish Civil War, this romantic drama stars Henry Fonda as a peasant fighting for the people's army. But things become complicated when he falls for the daughter (Madeleine Carroll) of a nationalist spy. Entertaining, if a little dated. Much of the dialogue for the film was supplied (uncredited) by the novelist James M Cain, who wrote The Postman Always Rings Twice .
