Warner Brothers tough guys Edward G Robinson and Humphrey Bogart square off against each other as rival boxing promoters in this enjoyable fight film. Wayne Morris plays the title role - a bellhop with a sharp right hook whom Edward G thinks he can turn into a champ after Morris comes to the rescue of his girlfriend (Bette Davis). It's fast-moving and well-plotted, making you eager to watch the climactic fight between Morris and nasty William Haade even though you know this is Hollywood in its heyday and there can only be one outcome. Edward G snarls around his cigar, Bogey sneers menacingly in the days before he became an incorruptible hero and Morris is charming as the naive boxer. Only Davis seems uncomfortable and out of place. It was another of those 'gangster's moll' roles Warner Brothers insisted on giving her despite her patent unsuitability for such parts.
