Much better known in this country as It's Magic, this is the film that launched the Hollywood career of Doris Day, a former singer with Les Brown's band. She was fourth billed here and only got the role as a last-minute replacement for Betty Hutton. Judy Garland had already turned it down. But 26-year-old Doris was the hit of the film, and cornered the market in a succession of freckle-faced girl-next-door roles in light musicals and dramas. Her big musical numbers, It's Magic and Put 'em in a Box, Tie 'em with a Ribbon and Throw 'em in the Deep Blue Sea, became king-sized hits in the dance halls. The film itself is little more than a series of tired romantic situations, but pepped up with snappy songs and choreography from Busby Berkeley, who returned to Warners studio specifically to create the dance sequences here.
