Exciting and beautifully realised version of Lillian Hellman's stage hit, with Bette Davis and Paul Lukas on great form as a European couple pursued by fascists in wartime America. Good though Davis is, she's outacted and upstaged (just for once in her career) by Lukas who produces career-best acting scooping him a deserved Oscar as Davis's German husband. The polished screenplay's by Hellman's pal Dashiell Hammett (impersonated by Jason Robards in the film of Hellman's autobiograpy Julia).
