Multi-tiered weepie starring Bette Davis and Henry Fonda who were to team up a year later for Jezebel. As a teenager, Davis had worked as a bit part player in a small repertory company in which Fonda, three years her senior, had played the leads. Later in her life she admitted she had a teenager's crush on him so when she became a star for Warner Brothers and was able to chose her male leads, she picked Fonda twice. This unashamedly soapy tear-jerker is an undistinguished vehicle for her immense talents. It tells the story of the young bride of a bootlegger who is killed in a hail of bullets. Striving for a better life, she begins work as a secretary to an attorney. When she meets young playboy Jack Merrick (Fonda) she falls in love and they marry. But everything and everyone seems set against their union...
