In this black comedy, the monstrous one-eyed Mrs Taggart, with her strident voice, elaborate gowns and designer eye-patches, is a role tailor-made for Bette Davis, in her full-throttle, grotesque-Guignol, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? mode. It's a portrayal, however, that quite unbalances the film itself, despite brave performances by Jack Hedley, Sheila Hancock and, especially, James Cossins, as the transvestite son. Based on a stage play (by Bill MacIlwraith) and often showing it, the script nevertheless contains some bitingly comic black dialogue and it's definitely the movie to see if you think YOU have mother-in-law troubles.
