Ziegfeld Girl, despite being about Broadway, is pure Hollywood. MGM pulled out almost all the stops with this one, creating a lavish extravaganza: enormous, opulent sets, hundreds of chorus girls, brilliant song-and-dance numbers and Busby Berkeley in charge of the choreography. Shame it wasn't in colour. It's basically the story of three girls - Judy Garland, Lana Turner and Hedy Lamarr - each of whom wants to be a Ziegfeld girl and get their big Broadway break. Supporting stars include James Stewart, Tony Martin, Jackie Cooper, Ian Hunter and Edward Everett Horton. Of course Garland is the big star here and lights up the screen in her four big numbers, but it's Turner who grabs the acting glory, proving for the first time that she was to be reckoned with as an actress when presented with the opportunity. Pure glitter. They really don't make 'em like this any more.
