This poignant tale of love destroyed by war, first filmed in 1931, was Vivien Leigh's follow-up to her amazing success in Gone With the Wind. She plays a dancer who falls in love with British soldier Robert Taylor during World War One. Before they can marry, he is called to the front and soon reported killed. She falls on hard times and Taylor, who had been a prisoner of war, returns... This classic weepie still has the power to have people hooked and sniffing into their hankies. Leigh is marvellous and Taylor revived a flagging career by proving that he was more than just a handsome face: no wonder that it was the favourite of his films.
