Once tipped to play the Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart roles in 'The African Queen', Bette Davis and James Stewart had to wait a further 32 years to star together! There's a novelty value in their casting, but this TV movie about an elderly couple who decide to commit suicide together because she's got a terminal illness is hardly worthy of their immense talents. Instead of the expected fireworks as these acting legends flex their respective muscles, it's a damp, talky squib, but that can probably be put down to its stage origins. Director George Schaefer, himself 63 at the time of filming, had extensive Broadway experience under his belt, but successfully switched to films and TV, where his work was honoured with eight Emmy awards. Look out for John Ratzenberger (Cliff the postman from 'Cheers') as a policeman. Several other members of the cast ended up on the cutting room floor when the ending was re-shot, but they're still credited on the print.
