Marlon Brando had a burning desire to make a strong political film and with this heated tale of revolution and colonial manipulation in the Caribbean he got his chance. Brando plays a British agent sent to the island of Quiemada to undermine Portuguese rule there. He foments revolution and leaves secure in the knowledge he has installed a puppet regime. But 10 years later he is sent back to the island. Much of this film is brilliant, including Brando's performance, but some is also boring and misguided. Still the good parts amply compensate for the bad bits. The film falls short of its ambitions, but still compels attention.
