A rare unsympathetic part for Spencer Tracy in a role that looks hand-tailored for James Cagney and was: Cagney priced himself out of the running and Tracy's career got a big boost from his skilful handling of the cocky criminal sent `up the river'. The first of several films based on accounts of prison life by real-life Sing Sing warden Lewis Lawes, who acted as technical adviser on this film. Bette Davis' rather flashy portrayal of Tracy's moll is not one of her best.
