Spitting and snarling, Edward G Robinson, who became the talkies' first gangster in 'Little Caesar', carries on in the same vein as Joe Krozac, an underworld boss who finds things have changed after he comes out of prison. Robinson was delighted with the part, which he saw as a farewell to his time in crime. But the typecasting was to dog him on and off for the rest of his career. Co-star James Stewart took another stride towards stardom, though he isn't flattered by a moustache and almost never wore one in films again.
