This sports biography, well directed by Sam Wood, was strengthened by the fact that it stuck more closely to the facts than was usual for its time. Athletic James Stewart was well cast in the role of baseball pitcher Monty Stratton, as was archetypal dutiful wife June Allyson as the girl Stratton marries. As Stratton's mother, Agnes Moorehead contributes a calm and restrained performance, and the film also benefits from the appearance of several baseball greats as themselves. Even if you know nothing about baseball, the film tells an inspiring human story, with Stratton battling against incredible odds after a tragic accident. The picture won an Oscar for screenplay writer Douglas Morrow.
