This dated but still touching vehicle for Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart (the second of their four films together) is a remake of an even older weepie that starred Nancy Carroll and Gary Cooper as the showgirl and the soldier who enjoy a mad fling in New York the night before he is due to be shipped overseas for wartime service. In keeping with the sweetness of her image, Sullavan's angel isn't quite as shopworn as Carroll's was in 1928, but Stewart's gangly charm is every inch the equal of Cooper's and there will be few dry eyes in the house as Sullavan goes on stage to sing Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag at the end.
