Susan Hayward got her first chance to dominate the screen and won an Oscar nomination as a result in the role of a booze-ravaged wife driven to disaster by the demon drink and the lengthy absences of her spouse. Her strong performance is probably made all the more striking by the weakness of her miscast co-star, Lee Bowman. Nostalgia buffs can look out for Noel Neill, once Lois Lane in the 'Superman' serials of the Forties, as a girl at a party. But this is Hayward's show and she knows it. The original British title was 'A Woman Destroyed'.
