Slightly cloying family drama in which Holly Hunter takes centre stage as the possessive wife of lawyer Bill Pullman. Director Martha Coolidge focuses on four women - two sisters (Hunter and Frances McDormand), their mother (Gena Rowland) and their somewhat confused grandmother (Herta Ware) - who all live together on a beautiful island off Seattle. The vicissitudes of their domestic and emotional lives form the hub of this well-made and well-acted piece. A pity that the whole thing becomes a little too cosy and dull.
