One of his better films, this is very typical of director John Cassavetes' work. It deals with a very human and essentially ordinary problem (in this case a 14-year marriage that has gone stale). As often in the director's work, much of the acting is improvised (but good) and the feel of the film almost that of a documentary. Also par for the course was the difficulty Cassavetes had getting it to the big screen, the rave reviews the critics gave it and the lukewarm response from the public. John Marley and Lynn Carlin play the couple who look else where for love. He with a prostitute (Gena Rowlands), she with an ageing beatnik (Seymour Cassel). Although it has its flat spots, the film is ultimately rewarding for those who stick with it.
