Fading star Myrtle Gordon is deeply shcoked after a fan is killed in a road accident while trying to talk to her. The incident completely throws her rehearsals for a new Broadway play, putting the production in jeopardy. As with many of director John Cassevetes' films, a summary of the plot tells you very little, to the point where you ask: Is that it? Of course it isn't, not by a long way. The subtle shadings and moving of the various characters in a Cassevetes film are where the fascination lies, plus the director's ability to bring out the best in his actors. If he seems a little undisciplined at times, this is more than compensated for by his sharp eye. There are uniformly fine performances here from Gena Rowlands as Myrtle, Ben Gazzara as the play's director, Cassevetes himself as its producer and Joan Blondell as the playwright.
