Another attempted breakthrough into mainstream cinema from Jean-Claude Van Damme, this action-drama-romance gives us the Muscles from Brussels as a warm-hearted escaped convict who proves, among other things, a whiz with motorcycles.
Alas, the vehicle that results here misfires on all cylinders except the action. Jean-Claude's acting style remains what you might call taciturn, while his heavy romance with Rosanna Arquette, a widow farmer (with two small children) menaced by land-grabbing Joss Ackland, founders on the rocks of such dialogue as (she) 'Would you like to sleep in my room tonight? ' He: 'You're a very special woman. See you tomorrow', raising more giggles than sighs.
The final fistfight with villain Ted Levine, however, really delivers, pitchforking us (literally) into the thick of things, and only slightly hampered by some intervening slow motion.
Arquette, as usual, looks as though she could be good in a decent film, but Ackland is pretty ludicrous as the villain and the kids are not too hot by today's demanding standards.
