This adaptation of the final novel by John Steinbeck, produced by the US TV company that created Dallas, is a glossy affair that should have made a fine TV movie. The cast is top drawer, with Donald Sutherland marking his first TV role for 15 years as the grocery clerk who dreams of buying back from the present owner the humble store which had been in his family for generations. The story tells of his corruption at the hands of the town's banker who wants him to sell out his alcoholic friend. And Tuesday Weld received an Emmy award nomination as Outstanding Supporting Actress. But the rest of the film is more a muddle than a marvel, thanks to a script that fails to capture the raw guts of Steinbeck's angry tale.
