Downbeat but totally absorbing espionage drama in typical John Le Carré style. The impressive low-key photography of Freddie Young sets the mood of bleakness, blackness and danger into which hard-pressed security agent James Mason must probe. He's out to break an espionage ring that lies behind a murder that most people thought was suicide. Although time has dulled some of its edge, director Sidney Lumet still gives us set pieces of nail-biting excitement.
