A grim, unrelenting police precinct drama which was nominated for four Oscars (including the performances by actresses Eleanor Parker and Lee Grant) and provides a typical, hard-driving role for Kirk Douglas as the detective with a fierce hatred for all criminals; his own unforgiving nature will prove to be his ultimate downfall. Director-producer William Wyler, who had already made such fine films as 'Wuthering Heights', 'The Letter' and 'The Little Foxes', proved once again here that he could handle actors with taste and understanding, drawing outstanding performances from, besides those mentioned, William Bendix, George Macready, Cathy O'Donnell and Joseph Wiseman.
