William Holden turns a bunch of misfits into crack commandos in this noisy but rather long drawn out war epic. The action sequence where the men scale an almost impossible mountain to take out key German positions is pretty exciting, but it takes a tediously long while to get there. Other big star names in the cast include Cliff Robertson, Vince Edwards, Michael Rennie and Dana Andrews. The story is a true one, but for once Hollywood would have done well to cut down on the build-up to the big finale. Not a bad film, but a disappointing one.
