This affecting film of Sinclair Lewis' novel was one of director William Wyler's first major triumphs. Walter Huston is marvellous as the businessman who retires early and takes an extended holiday in Europe with his selfish wife. The performance is so good as to have you praying that he makes all the right decisions in the end. Mary Astor excels as the 'other woman' with whom he becomes involved and David Niven and John Payne feature in minor roles. Outstanding.
