Unseen for many years, this is the Hollywood version of Maxwell Anderson's play about farm workers inducted into the American army during World War Two. Many soldiers went missing in action and this Fox-produced film was designed to give their kinfolk hope that they would be rescued. Light on action and far too talky for its own good, it nonetheless served its propaganda purpose in promoting morale on the homefront. Fox opted for an upbeat ending which is moving but doesn't resolve things totally. Competent leading performances by William Eythe, Anne Baxter and Vincent Price.
