One of those all-star films stemming from massive best-selling books, a genre of which Hollywood became particularly fond in the mid Fifties. The world of big business becomes a battleground when a company chairman dies without naming his successor. The conflict between those fighting over the position is developed with good character insight, their ambitions, dislikes and individual foibles presented with a distinctly human touch. Punchy performances all round, especially from William Holden, Dean Jagger, Barbara Stanwyck and Nina Foch. Twenty-five years later the story was taken to a sequel in a short-lived TV series.
