Opulent 18th century romance - the kind that was being remade as a sex saga a decade later. Paulette Goddard scored one of her biggest box-office successes as the guttersnipe reformed in Pygmalion style by Ray Milland's foppish Sir Hugh. But their thunder is largely stolen by Cecil Kellaway's roguish Gainsborough, by Reginald Owen as the doddery Duke of Malmunster, striving to keep his faded youth revived with port wine and by Sara Allgood as a kind of female Fagin. Eric Blore contributes his familiar impression of a bewildered butler.
