One of Hollywood's most prestigious Shakespearean productions, with an electrifying performance by Marlon Brando as Mark Antony, this is still the best film version available of Shakespeare's play.

There are memorable performances from John Gielgud as Cassius and Edmond O'Brien as Casca, and the film's wealth of expert character-drawing extends right down to the minor roles, one of which is played by Edmund Purdom.

Directed with imagination by Joseph L Mankiewicz, the film proved that the public would go for Shakespeare if the impact was strong and the performances attractive enough.
